Log Sawing | Ceremonies.Scot

A lively symbol of teamwork, strength, and shared effort

Log Sawing is a fun, energetic Bavarian tradition where the couple saw through a small log together using a two‑handled saw. It’s a brilliant moment of teamwork — a chance to laugh, encourage each other, and show how you tackle challenges side by side.

It brings a burst of energy to the ceremony and creates fantastic photos.

What it symbolises

  • Facing challenges together
  • Teamwork, balance, and communication
  • Strength in partnership
  • The first task you complete as a married couple

It’s perfect for couples who enjoy something hands‑on, light‑hearted, and memorable.

How we do it

  • Your celebrant introduces the tradition and its meaning.
  • The log is placed securely on a stand or sawhorse.
  • You each take one end of the two‑handled saw.
  • With a steady rhythm — and usually a few laughs — you saw through the log together.
  • Once the cut is complete, the moment is celebrated with applause and great photos.

Your celebrant will guide the timing so it fits naturally into the ceremony flow.

What you need to supply

  • To keep things safe and smooth, couples usually bring:
  • A small log (nothing too thick — around 10–15 cm diameter works well)
  • A two‑handled saw
  • A stable stand or sawhorse
  • Optional decorations (tartan, flowers, ribbons) if you want it to look ceremonial

If you’re unsure about sizes or setup, we can advise.

What we supply

Your celebrant can provide guidance on setup and positioning, and will help ensure the moment runs safely and smoothly. If you don’t have equipment, we can discuss options.

Where it fits in the ceremony

Log Sawing works best at the end of the ceremony as a lively, celebratory moment after you walk back up the aisle together.

Variations you might like

  • Decorated Log — wrapped in tartan or flowers.
  • Family Assist — children or family help steady the log.
  • Keepsake Slice — the cut section is kept, signed, or engraved.
  • Music Moment — a fun or meaningful song plays while you saw.
  • Outdoor Version — ideal for woodland, barn, or garden ceremonies.

Things to consider

  • Is your venue suitable for a hands‑on gesture?
  • Do you want the moment to be playful, symbolic, or both?
  • Would you like to keep the cut slice as a keepsake?
  • Who will set up the log and stand before the ceremony?
  • Do you want music or silence during the sawing?

A wee reassurance

You don’t need to choose this now — and you don’t need to choose it at all. If Log Sawing feels like a fun, meaningful way to show your teamwork, wonderful. If not, your ceremony will still be every bit as personal and heartfelt.
