QUAICH CEREMONY

Share the Cup

A wee symbol of unity and togetherness

The Quaich is a traditional Scottish two‑handled cup, symbolising unity, trust and the joining of two families. It’s one of the simplest gestures to include — warm, meaningful, and beautifully Scottish without being overly formal.

What it symbolises

  • Sharing life together
  • Trust and partnership
  • Two families becoming one

A moment of calm connection in the ceremony.

The two handles represent each of you holding the cup together — a literal symbol of meeting in the middle.

How it works on the day

  1. Your celebrant introduces the Quaich and its meaning.
  2. You hold the Quaich together.
  3. Each of you takes a sip — one after the other, until the quaich is empty.

The moment can be light‑hearted, traditional, or quietly reflective.

What you will need

  • Your chosen drink (anything meaningful to you)
  • Traditional whisky is common, but you’re absolutely free to choose:
  • A favourite spirit
  • A cocktail
  • A soft drink
  • Something symbolic
  • Even water

Your own Quaich if you’d like to use a personal or engraved one.

It’s the act of sharing that matters, not what’s inside.

What we supply

If you’re not bringing your own, your celebrant will provide a Quaich for use on the day.

Where it fits in the ceremony

Sharing a Quaich usually sits after the signing of the marriage schedule.

Variations you might like

  • Family Pouring — a parent from each side pours a little into the Quaich before you drink.
  • Blended Drinks — you each add a small measure of something different, creating a new blend together.
  • Children’s Moment — children add a drop of juice or water.
  • Keepsake Quaich — engraved with names or your wedding date.

Things to consider

  • Would you like to use your own Quaich or your celebrant’s?
  • What drink feels meaningful or “you”?
  • Would you like family involved in the pouring?
  • Should the moment be light‑hearted, traditional, or somewhere in between?

A wee reassurance

You don’t need to choose this now — and you don’t need to choose it at all. If sharing a Quaich feels like a warm, meaningful moment for you, wonderful. If not, your ceremony will still be every bit as personal and heartfelt.
